Teens learning to protect online identities

Friday, May 4th, 2007

According to a report from The Pew Internet & American Life Project, teenagers are learning to protect their online identities.

For the last few years, there has been growing concern about teens giving away too much personal information online – something which not only could impact their future careers, but impact their personal security & safety.

The report indicates that teenagers (age 12-17) don’t often think twice about sharing their first name & photo in their blog and on social networking sites, but they do refrain from sharing their last name or full public profile. One third of teens offer up their last name and the same number offer up their email address. 45% of online teens have no profile at all.

As social networking sites grow more popular, they are also becoming more secure. More controls are in place to password-protect your profile or to make it "friends only".

"Teens are manifesting the tension between wanting to keep themselves safe online and wanting to share themselves with their friends and potentially make new ones," said Amanda Lenhart, a senior research specialist at Pew." Teens, particularly girls and younger teens, have gotten the message about protecting themselves on social networks, but the fun of these networks is the ability to share yourself with others on them."

There is cause for concern. 21% of teens have been contacted by people they don’t know, and only 23% of them felt concern. Most concern centers around personal threat but, as more personal information is shared over time, these teens could put themselves at risk for future identity theft. The report is a positive indication that teenagers are aware of the dangers posed online.

Shred-a-thon

Friday, May 4th, 2007

M&I Bank Arizona is sponsoring a "shred-a-thon" to help fight identity theft.

Residents and businesses can have their personal documents shredded professionally, ensuring it’s properly disposed of. A camera is installed in the shredder so that individuals can witness the destruction of their documents.

M&I Bank has sponsored several of these "shred-a-thon"/ "shred-fest" events in order to combat the high rate of identity theft. Arizona has more identity-theft complaints than any other state, for two years running, according to the FTC.

The upcoming "shred-a-thon" will be held on May 10th at M&I Bank (13926 W. Bell Road, Surprise). More "shred-a-thons" are scheduled for upcoming months, across the state. Information is available here.

Residents are encouraged to bring old bills, old tax returns (past 7 years), and medical records. If you plan on shredding at home, make sure your shredder is a cross-cut shredder, making it more difficult to put the pieces back together.

Bethel plans community survey

Thursday, May 3rd, 2007

According to the News Democrat, the Bethel School District is planning to send a survey this fall to the surrounding district to see how parents and students feel about the district, and what ideas they may have.

The survey will be approximately 2 pages long with questions ranging from:

  • Education – with the Board of Education and staff
  • Security
  • Administration
  • Open Comments

Comments concerning administration or teachers will be communicated so improvements can be made. Questions of security likely follow issues such as violence in schools rather than the protection of private data of students and staff. As of yet, these issues have not enacted enough of a response to be included in a survey of this sort.

The District is initiating the first community survey in Bethel; an initiative which reflects well on them. By being socially responsible, Bethel School District not only gain favor with the community, but also gain valuable data to improve the overall education program.

Guerilla marketing security campaign

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Here is an interesting way to alert your employees to their bad security habits. It’s a guerilla marketing campaign created by Groove 11 and Sun Microsystems. It poses as an online resume for one Matt Bennett, looking to work in IT. This Matt Bennett creates blog posts and video content to point out security flaws and bring awareness to security issues.

Although I don’t like the lack of disclosure on the site, I do admire the vision. The material is engaging and could be a great addition to your security training program. You could show the video(s) to break the ice, and encourage employees to subscribe to the blog for entertaining – and enlightening – updates.

Here is the video resume created by ‘Matt Bennett’:
