If you are a long-time reader of the Absolute Software blog, you’ll recall the 2009 study we sponsored with the Ponemon Institute – The Human Factor in Laptop Encryption. We have now followed-up that with a 2010 study looking at the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France and Sweden markets.
The study shows that business managers are continuing to ignore laptop security procedures above and beyond encryption. Indeed, even with encryption, most corporations are unable to determine if encrypted data remains secure.
Key findings from the whitepaper:
95% of IT practitioners report that someone in their organization has had a laptop lost or stolen
Of those laptops lost or stolen, 72% resulted in a data breach.
After a data breach, 0nly 44% of organizations were able to prove the contents were encrypted.
33% of IT practitioners believe encryption makes it unnecessary to use other security measures, whereas 58% of business managers believe this to be the case.
62% of business managers surveyed strongly agree and agree that encryption stops cyber criminals from stealing data on laptops versus 46% of IT practitioners who strongly agree or agree.
36% of business managers surveyed record their encryption password on a private document such as a post-it note to jog their memory or share the key with other individuals. Virtually none of the IT practitioners record their password on a private document or share it with another person.
60% of business managers have disengaged their laptop’s encryption solution and 48% admit this is in violation of their company’s security policy.
55% of business managers sometimes or often leave their laptop with a stranger when traveling.
You’ll see there are many troubling pieces of information there. Individuals have a false sense of security about their laptop security. Indeed, many individuals appear to ignore laptop security altogether by disengaging encryption or not using safe password practices. Are you using a layered approach to your laptop security? If not, find out how we can help!
Absolute Software recently acquired the LANrev systems management platform from Pole Position Software. Absolute has brough this computer lifecycle management product into our brand family, and it’s now called Absolute Manage.
Absolute Manage provides organizations with an easy and automated way to manage PC and Mac computers, as well as iPhone devices, from a single interface. IT administrators using Absolute Manage can efficiently manage all their assets by automating time-consuming IT processes such as software distribution, patch management, asset inventory and imaging. Additionally, it helps organizations save money by allowing them to track installed applications and licenses, redeploy under-used licenses and hardware to maximize inventory, and avoid non-compliance fines. Absolute Manage can be added on to new or existing Computrace licenses or purchased as a stand-alone solution.
Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) put together an Impact Brief about this acquisition and how it benefits the user bases of both companies. You can download the brief here, read our news release here, or contact an Absolute representative.
While at CES, where we made the big announcement that LoJack for Laptops would now have Intel Anti-Theft Technology, we gave a couple of video interviews. Those interviews have made their way to YouTube.
First up, an interview with Stephen Broscoe of Absolute Software for GeekNews. Stephen talks about the new partnership, explaining how LoJack for Laptops works with Intel AT to lock down missing laptops. You’ll also get some handy information about many of the purchasing methods for our software – and you can, of course, find more on that here.
This second segment is with iGizmoMag interviewing Richard Cohen. This interview gives you a good primer into how our software works as well some insight into how much else is often recovered when a laptop is found (I bet you never thought of that part!):
Today we made the big announcement at CES in Las Vegas that LoJack for Laptops is bringing the Intel® Anti-Theft Technology(Intel® AT) remote locking and messaging capabilities to consumers – the first computer theft recovery, data protection and IT asset management solution to do so!
What this means: you will now have a combined solution for theft recovery, remote data delete and *NEW* remote lock down and message display capabilities!!
Prior to an Intel AT enabled computer going missing, a LoJack for Laptops customer can set the frequency with which a computer must check in with Absolute monitoring servers before Intel AT automatically locks it. If an Intel AT enabled computer has not checked in within the specified time, Intel AT working through LoJack for Laptops would automatically lock the notebook, rendering it unusable to an unauthorized user.
After an Intel AT enabled computer goes missing, a customer can log in to their LoJack for Laptops account and trigger Intel AT to remotely lock a computer. Customers with Computrace LoJack for Laptops Premium also have the option to remotely delete the data on the computer prior to locking it.
If you are at CES, be sure to stop by our booth (#8953) for a live demo! We’ll also be at Showstoppers the evening of January 7, 2010 to discuss and demo the product for media at table #1.
